For our June Luncheon Seminar, we welcome Mr. Haruaki Deguchi, President of the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
Mr. Deguchi is the founder of Lifenet Insurance, the first independent Japanese life insurance company created after World War II. Its business model, centered on selling insurance online, brought about significant innovation in the industry. His newest undertaking is as President of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (“APU”).
APU, founded in Oita Prefecture’s Beppu City in 2000, boasts a uniquely international diversity in both its students and faculty – around half of its instructors are from overseas, with nearly three thousand international students from 89 different countries and regions. APU serves as a standard-bearer for Japanese international education, producing talented graduates empowered with skills necessary to lead on the global stage.
Mr. Deguchi was inaugurated as the fourth President of APU in January 2018, the result of a unique public call for applicants to the position by APU. Such bold recruitment moves are unprecedented for Japanese universities.
In our Luncheon Seminar, Mr. Deguchi will of course cover his own experiences to date before discussing issues facing Japan that he has discovered in his initiatives with APU. He will also look ahead to APU’s future goals and his outlook as such, with those issues in mind.
Deguchi Haruaki was inaugurated as the 4th President of APU on January 1, 2018. In a first for the university, Mr. Deguchi was selected by a committee that considered candidates from outside the Ritsumeikan University system.
Mr. Deguchi is the cofounder of Lifenet Insurance, the first independent Japanese insurance company created in 74 years. He served as President and Managing Director from the company’s founding in 2006 until 2013, when he became Chairman and CEO. Previously, Mr. Deguchi held various roles with Nippon Life Insurance Company in a career that spanned nearly 35 years, including president of the company’s London-based subsidiary and general manager of the international business division.
Before joining APU, Mr. Deguchi had been appointed as a lecturer at Keio University and Waseda University. In 2005, he was an advisor to the Office of the President at the University of Tokyo.
Mr. Deguchi is a prolific author, having written more than 35 books. Since January 2018, he has written a monthly opinion column for The Japan Times. He holds a degree from the Faculty of Law at the University of Kyoto.
